Janice Dutts Goes to Life Camp
For most small theater companies, getting the promotional collateral together for a production can be a chore. When Factory approached me to design pieces for them, I set out to make things easier for everybody. For Janice Dutts, the first of three productions I designed, I made two suggestions:
- Use the publicity photo for the poster artwork. With any luck, the photo will get printed in the paper, meaning more repetition of the image.
- Make a template. Spend time focusing on the image and the title (the fun part) and don’t worry about the rest of it ever again.
With Janice Dutts, I was able to solve more than just their communication problem. Rehearsals only had to be interrupted for one photo shoot. Future collateral would be produced more quickly.
My goal for these pieces was to convey the frenetic hysteria typically spun by a Factory production and, in the instance of Janice Dutts, portray the titular character as trapped. All in all, after four different color palettes, the producers were very pleased with the outcome, as am I.
By the way, I also took the photo.
